Flea & Tick Season - which protection is right for you & your pet?

May 13, 2015

This amazing weather we have been having has brought out the ticks. This year, we already seeing an increase in ticks! In addition to giving you the creepy-crawlies, ticks carry major diseases, such as Lyme Disease, Ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, STARI (Southern Tick Associated Rash Illness),  and Tularemia. Dr. Wood has also seen cases of Tick Paralysis - a rare case of paralysis that develops from due to the venom secreted by the feeding female tick.

Myth: Because your pet doesn't go running in the woods means your pet is safe from ticks

.

Fact: Ticks live on the ground - no matter the locale. Ticks crawl up on blades of grass to attach themselves to your pet or you.

The best thing to do when you find a tick on your pet is to remove it right away! DO NOT use a lit match to remove the tick. This old wives' tale can actually cause the tick to "regurgitate" and spread more disease! The best way to remove the tick is to grasp it as close to the skin as possible with tweezers and pull the tick's body straight out (don't worry about leaving the head behind, it is extremely hard to do that).

All pet's need tick protection! But do you know which type of protection is right for you and your pet?

We offer some of the best agents to help protect your pet from these nasty parasites!

Frontline Tritak: This is similar to the Frontline Plus that we have carried in the past. Frontline Tritak offers a three pronged attack that starts killing ticks & fleas in as little as five minutes! It can also be used to control the mites that may cause sarcoptic mange in dogs. Frontline Tritak prevents all flea stages - killing adults eggs, and larvae. Studies have shown that one dose prevents fleas for up to three months! To protect against ticks and chewing lice, apply monthly. Frontline Tritak can be given to puppies 12 weeks and older and as small as 4lbs.

NexGard: This is a great product from the makers of Frontline. This is a soft, beef-flavored chewable treat that protects against fleas and ticks and dogs love. The great thing about NexGard is that it can be given with or without food. NexGard can be given to puppies as young as 8 weeks and as small as 4lbs.

Seresto: This is a new product that has some great research behind it. This is a flea/tick collar that actually works! Seresto provides 8 months of protection from fleas and it kills & repels ticks! This flea/tick collar comes with reflectors on it for increased visibility at night, and can be used on puppies as young as 7 weeks.

Revolution: Another great product. This in also a top-spot, but it provides protection against heartworm disease, as well as preventing and controlling flea populations. It can be used in puppies as young as 6 weeks of age. It can also be used to treat the mange mites. Revolutions treats and controlls the American Dog tick, but not all varieties of ticks.

There are many great products out there to protect your pets from fleas and ticks.

We recommend Frontline Tritak if you have had a flea problem in the past. It is a great product for ticks and does help repel them. We recommend that you do not bathe your dog 3 days before or after the application to help the product work effectively. Frontline is not soap-proof, but it is waterproof. We do not recommend to let your dog get wet for the first 48 hours after application. Because Frontline is a top-spot, it does leave a greasy spot at the application site for 24-48 hours. So if your dog is white, or if you have children, it may not be the best option for you.

We recommend NexGard for all pets, especially if you groom or bathe your dog frequently. We recommend it for the outside dogs that have a tendency to roll in mud puddles as well. Because it is oral, it cannot be washed off. It is great for people that have children and don't want to worry about the oily spot. We love NexGard because almost all dogs love the flavor, and eat it like a treat. Another great thing is that NexGard does not need to be given with food. Other oral flea/tick preventatives have to be given with food or the effectiveness changes. NexGard can be given as treat - making it much easier to give.

We recommend Seresto to the working dogs. Because it is an 8 month flea/tick collar, it is a one-and-done treatment. Like all flea/tick collars, for it work Seresto must be worn tight to the skin. It does have three reflectors to help aid in visibility. We do not recommend Seresto to people with children. As with all flea/tick collars, you do not want children to hold on to the collar. Unlike traditional flea/tick collars, Seresto has a lot of literature backing it. It is a great product that lasts.

Revolution does not cover all varieties of ticks, but it still a great product. We use Revolution on super tiny dogs and young puppies. It works amazing on fleas, as well as the sarcoptic mange mite, and other mites including ear mites. Revolution is a heartworm prevention medication. We recommend Revolution for the pets that have exposure to mange or if you only want to use one product for both flea/tick and heartworm prevention.
